After another successful weekend for the
blog previewing the FA cup matches we now turn our attention back to the
premier league, the fixtures scheduled for Tuesday is a real basement battle
featuring four of the bottom five teams. The outcome of this set of fixtures
could have a major impact the course of the season.
ASTON VILLA v NEWCASTLE UNITED
Strangely for Villa they face a team in worst form than themselves. Villa come into the match with three defeats in their last five matches whilst Newcastle have lost four of their last five. Looking at their home form Villa have won two and lost three of the last five at home. In these matches they have averaged just less than one goal a game but conceded on average two goals. Goal scoring has been the major problem for Villa this season and this is evident when you see their top scorer being Benteke on seven goals and his next closest rival is Weimann on four goals. The visitors have really struggled this season after their success of last season. One major problem in the early season for Newcastle was injuries to key players and they are still missing Ben Arfa but are boosted by the return of Cabaye. This has then been compounded by the sale of Demba Ba to Chelsea. Newcastle are without a win in their last five overall and also in their last five away matches. They have slightly different issues to their opponents, Newcastle have not found any difficulty in scoring goals but have found keeping a clean sheet impossible. Just two clean sheets in their last fifteen away matches quite clearly outlines their issues. They have averaged just over one goal per game on the road and I would believe they should score against Villa as well. Both of these two teams have strong records for early goals in recent matches with Villa having three of their last five seeing a goal inside twenty five minutes and Newcastle seeing five in their last eight matches, that alone both of these teams have seen several low scoring matches recently. Historically Newcastle have just one win in their last seven trips to Villa and I wouldn’t be brave enough to predict another victory for them on Tuesday. A lot will depend on the strength of the Newcastle line-up and if any of their new signings are tested this early after signing. I think Newcastle can well avoid defeat in this match but who ever does lose it could well be a tragic defeat. The key point for Newcastle will be not conceding early to then put pressure on the young Villa team.
STATS
Villa home winning percentage = 35%
Villa home matches with over 2 goals scored = 71%
Villa home matches with both teams scoring = 42%
Newcastle away matches over 2 goals scored = 88%
Newcastle away matches with both teams scoring = 64%
Newcastle away winning percentage = 0%
QUEENS PARK RANGERS v MANCHESTER CITY
Next we see the champions travel to London to face Queens Park Rangers, the hosts have seen a slight improvement in their form under Harry Redknapp but would have preferred to turn draws into wins. They have suffered just one defeat in their last five matches but have drawn three of these matches and won just once. Their home form is still a major cause for concern with three defeats and two draws in the last five. They have averaged just over one goal per game at home and this has been a real issue with their defence leaking just under two goals per match. In contrast the champions come into the match in a real rich vein of form. They have won eight of their last ten matches and won all of their last five matches. On their travels they have won four of their last five with the only defeat being at Sunderland. One point to note is in recent matches City have increased the goal average considerably going from one and half goals per game to two goals per game. They have a good record at Loftus Road with just two defeats in their last seven matches although most of the matches have been a goal scoring draw. I would suggest this match should see at least a couple of goals and I would edge towards an away victory here in this match result.
STATS
QPR home winning percentage = 13%
QPR home matches with over 2 goals scored = 86%
QPR home matches with both teams scoring = 66%
Man City away matches over 2 goals scored = 66%
Man City away matches with both teams scoring = 53%
Man City away winning percentage = 46%
STOKE CITY v WIGAN
Fellow strugglers Wigan travel to a happy hunting ground for themselves at the Britannia Stadium to face Stoke. Having only suffered one defeat away to Stoke in their last seven matches the visitors must come into the game mildly confident. Neither of these two teams have been in great form recently with Wigan losing three of their last five league matches and with just one victory. Stoke have an identical record with just one victory in their last five league matches, this came against Liverpool at home on Boxing Day. Their home record overall is much better with just one defeat in their last fifteen home matches this came recently against Chelsea. They have averaged just over one goal per game but have kept a clean sheet in a third of their home matches. Looking at Wigan’s away form in stands at nine defeats in their last fifteen averaging just one goal per game. I wouldn’t like to say this match will contain too many goals but I would suggest a home victory and more relegation woes for Wigan.
STATS
Stoke home winning percentage = 42%
Stoke home matches with over 2 goals scored = 64%
Stoke home matches with both teams scoring = 50%
Wigan away matches over 2 goals scored = 73%

Wigan away winning match percentage = 50%
SUNDERLAND v SWANSEA
The final match sees Swansea travel to the north east to face Sunderland, Swansea have been in real good form recently and have seen a marked improvement in their away form this season. They have suffered just one defeat in their last five away matches that coming against Arsenal in the cup. But looking at these last five away matches they have all seen under three goals scored and three clean sheets for Swansea. Sunderland’s form has improved recently with two wins and a draw in their last five matches overall. Looking at their home form they have won three of their last five matches and the only defeats coming against an in form Tottenham and a cup defeat to Bolton. Early in the season Sunderland really struggled for goals but in recent weeks that has improved, in their last five matches three of these matches have seen three or more goals. Swansea have a reasonable record at Sunderland with just one defeat in their last five previous three meetings. I would suggest this could be another close match but would suggest Swansea should be able come away with at least a point from the stadium of light.
STATS
Sunderland home winning percentage = 35%
Sunderland home matches with over 2 goals scored = 57%
Sunderland home matches with both teams scoring = 35%
