Close Contest

Saturday proved to be a very successful day for the blog with two anytime scorers and two wins and two voids in the mug tips.  Sunday now offers some interesting matches in the premier league between teams that are very closely positioned with each other.

Newcastle United V Stoke City

Newcastle have seen a marked improvement in results since January and few would have thought back then Newcastle would only be three points behind Stoke come March.  But Stoke have been the opposite of Newcastle and have now been in real decline for the last two months.  Tony Pulis now finds himself under pressure from some sections of the Stoke faithful.  In my opinion Stoke fans should look at teams like Charlton Athletic who became annoyed with Alan Curbishley and mid table finishes.  In the pursuit of glory the fans put pressure on the manager and he left,  shortly Charlton found themselves suffering relegation's and no longer in the premier league.  Coming into the match Newcastle travelled to Russia in midweek and this may well effect their performance but they did rotate their starting eleven.  They also find themselves minus Coloccini and he may well be sidelined for several weeks.  Stoke will be missing Robert Huth who is suspended other than that they have no injury concerns.  My thoughts are Newcastle should take the points in this match but Stoke will make it difficult and a early goal could be vital if Newcastle are to take the maximum points.

Liverpool V Tottenham Hotspur

This match is a clash between two of the premier leagues most in form and stylish teams and is sure to be a real entertaining clash.  Liverpool have really discovered their goal scoring touch since January, this of course has been assisted with the arrivals of Daniel Sturridge and Coutinho.  This added pace and movement has been a real bonus and taken some of the pressure off Luis Suarez.  But whilst many have noticed the recent glut of goals scored by Liverpool not so many have noticed the severe improvement in defence and three clean sheets in their last five home matches.  Looking at Tottenham their season has seemed to gain real momentum in the last month and strangely it was kick started by the loss of Jermaine Defoe and the move to bring Gareth Bale into a central role.  Bale has now scored in four of their last five matches and the team seem to be really pushing for a top three finish and possible European success.  Their demolition of Inter Milan in midweek served to be a real warning for teams who face them on the league run in.  They still have to face Chelsea, Everton and Manchester City so they will have a real impact on the final positions of teams in the top six.  Liverpool have a poor record against Spurs at home with only two victories in their last five and strangely only one of these last five have seen over two goals scored.  I believe we will see goals in this match on Sunday and Liverpool may well have to be happy with a draw from this match.
