The Magic of the cup

Saturday 6th January

Today brings around F.A cup third round day, the day when the big fish enter the competition and some real giant killing can happen.  In recent years there has seen fewer real shocks but every year always throws up a few.  Again I can't look beyond the obvious favourites for winning the cup but this year with both Manchester teams, Chelsea & Tottenham showing slight weaknesses in defence perhaps this could be a year for a surprise.

First up sees Newcastle travel to Brighton, this is the first possible upset.  Although Brighton have not been brilliant at home they face a Newcastle team that have lost Ba & are in a real poor run of results.  Like all in today's matches the start will be vital for the minnows.  I would suggest this game could see goals though historically early kick offs are low scoring affairs.

In the three o'clock kick offs I can see other possible upsets at Bolton facing a goal shy Sunderland & in form Crystal Palace at home against a Stoke team who don't travel well. Also championship strugglers Wolves travel away to non league Luton which could be a real test against a team with a cup pedigree.   Southampton face Chelsea at home, and while many won't give them a chance the saints home form has improved and if Rafa rotates this could be closer than anticipated.  The last two matches where I could possibly see problems pits Wigan at home against inform Bournemouth and a game where Roberto Martinez has suggested he will rest players.  Lastly Manchester United travel to Upton Park, the match at Old Trafford between these teams was close.  If United show their recent weaknesses to crosses & corners they could come unstuck against a powerful West Ham side.  The choice of goalkeeper picked could be vital for the visitors as could the selection of Vidic.

As always thanks for reading & good luck people !!
